When new buildings are designed and built, architects and constructors must consider the future in terms of climate change. They have a crucial responsibility to design sustainable facades, and energy-efficient structures, and to take active measures that are thoroughly low-carbon (and ideally carbon-neutral). These measures have to take into account the building process, but also, and more important in terms of impact, the use of the building.

Our love for glass in architecture is a clear example. Not too long ago, architects chose fully glass facades as the solution. Simple, elegant, and cost-effective, glass was the first choice for a lot of buildings. But it renders inefficiency in energy use. Full-height glazing lets in a substantial amount of light, but also a great deal of heat, which then requires air-conditioning -itself a generator of heat- to correct this problem.

Nowadays, architects are changing their approach to this matter. New energy-saving sources of light (LED) are reducing the need for attracting as much light as needed into the building, saving a lot of heat buildup. But we still would like to see our world from our building. Through shading constructions, a sustainable facade can prevent a lot of heat from entering the building, reducing the strain on the climate control systems in the building.

sustainable facades

80% heat reduction from solar effects with fabric facades.

A PES/PVC fabric sustainable facade as a flexible second skin around a building is one of the most cost-effective solutions, as it can retain up to 80% of the heat from the sun. It’s a low-cost solution compared to other facade claddings, and it offers a higher degree of customization as the fabrics can be printed with any pattern or design. They are characterized by their lightweight, high durability, flexibility, and resistance to different weather conditions.

Thanks to a shallow ecological footprint, fabric facades are an ideal application to make the building and renovation industry more sustainable. The idea that PVC-containing materials should be excluded in the search for sustainable materials in the construction industry does not apply in the case of polyester/PVC facade mesh. This material has a technical lifespan of 18-30 years. Producers offer recycling programs to process waste and replacement materials fully. And thanks to the temperature control and lighter substructure required, energy and costs are saved. As such, fabric sustainable facade actively contributes to achieving environmental certifications in the construction sector. Think of LEED, HQE, and BREEAM.

More benefits from fabric sustainable facades.

As mentioned above the flexibility offered by fabric facade systems. Depending on the design, the facade mesh fulfills various primary functions, like noise reduction, windshields, and heat shields. But also visual functions as a branding or communication tool. Collaborations with (local) artists that can be applied by print both to the inside and outside of the facade.

Next-generation is taking Nitrogen out of the environment.

At this moment, a pilot project is done by RWTH Aachen University supported by the Institute for Textile Technology Aachen (ITA) on a facade of an ECE office building in Hamburg. This textile sustainable facade has been treated with an additional coating with nano-titanium oxide. The coating binds the harmful nitrogen oxides that pollute the air through car emissions. The act not only binds nitrogen oxides but also helps to reduce the CO2 emission of the 22-year-old building: Studies have shown that this new mesh fabric building envelope can reduce up to 78 percent of the solar cooling loads of buildings in summer.

Isn’t it beautiful? The matching colors of the printed curtain sider and the cabin color make for a unique and impressive identifying image. However, what will it look like in a year after UV radiation and other harsh weather conditions have shown their forces? Well, just as beautiful as it looks now!

Our polyurethane fusion process makes the difference. Whereas most printed side curtains will lose their color intensity within two years, resulting in a disbalance between cabin and curtain, side curtains printed with SolidskinTec are not influenced by the harsh conditions that trucks are exposed to. The SolidskinTec printing process provides a unique degree of gloss. This gloss ensures that the shine on the side curtain is the same as that of metallic bodywork. Our printers are capable of matching any color standard, including automotive paints. The matching colors of the printed truck side curtains and the color of the cabins make for a unique and impressive identifying image. Printed truck side curtains are a perfect way to profile a product or service to the public. To create a clear message and utilize the opportunities to their fullest, there are a few things to consider when coming up with the design.

8 tips for the design for trailer curtains
truck side curtains

Be aware of the medium.

Did you know that a truck side curtains is seen around a million times per month?

Lorries are very large and move through the traffic. That’s why you should try to limit the message to its core. For example, a phone number is more complex to remember than a website or company name. Make a clear decision when it comes to the aim of your message. Is increasing brand recognition more critical, or are you trying to bring a message to the public’s attention?

truck side curtains

The ratchet straps and reflective stripes on truck side curtains

Ratchet straps and the compulsory reflective stripes disrupt the image space and are more susceptible to damage. Therefore, considering this in your truck side curtains design is a good idea. The buckles can tear or come loose on a journey or might not have been closed properly, and the straps might then rub the curtain, causing visible damage. To prevent this kind of mechanical damage to the image, the manufacturer of the side curtain can design the lower part of the full-color image with a strip of colored canvas. It is, therefore, advisable to have as little imagery as possible in this strip or to consciously include the strip in the design.

truck side curtains

The weather strip

A so-called weather strip of about 10 cm is added to the top of the truck side curtains to prevent rainwater from coming in. This fixed part of the trailer covers the opening between the rails and the curtain side. You should allow for a reduction in the image size due to this strip. If the strip is made partially or entirely made of a hard synthetic material, it will cut the full-color curtain side like a knife whenever the curtain is opened or closed. This could damage the image after a while. To prevent this, a dark PVC strip can be welded to the curtain side. This strip is cut without it being noticeable, preventing this from happening to the actual curtain. Ask the manufacturer of your curtain for the well-known details about this.

The use of color and cabin color in combination with the truck side curtains

Standard truck side curtains are only available in conventional bodywork colors, but it’s the combination of an iconic lorry and trailer color that can create a personal and signature style. With a truck side curtain printed with SolidskinTec, you are sure the color match will stay accurate for over 5 years.

Resolution of images

Producing printed truck side curtains is more than simply printing. The SolidskinTec printing process has been specially developed to enhance the image and protect its appearance. Through our process, colors seem much more intense, and shades of black are much richer due to our polyurethane fusing process. When preparing an image, shades of black must be ‘rich black.’ Bearing in mind the intensifying effect, it is also essential to make the middle tints lighter to increase the contrast.

The technical textiles we use are standard grey on the inside. This is a deliberate choice; the dirt from intensive use is less visible or not visible at all, and the contours of the load can’t be seen when light shines from the side (block-out effect). An additional advantage is that the color intensity of the actual image on the truck side curtains is much greater.

Left and right sides of truck side curtains

A fact sometimes forgotten is that the direction you drive affects the design. Despite it being easy to apply the same design on both sides of the truck side curtains, in practice, we see that this only works with a centered layout. It’s always worth at least mirroring the design per side and taking a good look at the whole image story.

Resolution

Although the resolution isn’t an issue in the case of a vector design, it can prove to be a challenge for pixel designs on large surfaces. Our printers can process a resolution of 600 dpi, which sometimes makes files extremely large. Our printing software adjusts for this, which means that (with the correct conversion of files) we can work with images as low as 250 dpi at 100% and still achieve a perfect result.

So, you should ensure that the images in the design have this resolution or higher. It is, therefore, sometimes necessary to enlarge the image beforehand. If this enlargement is over 150% of the original image, we advise you to put ‘noise’ or ‘grain’ over the image. This increases the varnishing effect described in photography.
